Hiring: How do you hire, who do you hire, and what do you look for when you hire?

I think this is a good one to start with that includes both career professionals and entrepreneurs: Hiring the Right People – “What’s the #1 trait you look for when hiring? Skills or attitude?

Personally, over the last 2-3 years I have gotten incredibly selective in my hiring. Gone are the times that I just look for a body to fill a position. I would rather work twice as hard for 2-3 months and find the perfect person than just hire to fill a spot.

Mostly, I am looking for a good culture fit. I have to be able to work with this person every day and still enjoy coming to work. I also have to know that this person is on the team and willing to work together to complete the task at hand, whatever task that may be. If there is a learning curve, I can teach that. What I can’t teach is that person showing up for work every day wanting to succeed and achieve greatness.

Obviously, depending on the position, certain experience is required. Honestly, I think I’ve dropped the box of “bachelors required” off my list. I think there are plenty of great candidates with the right culture fit and experience that can catapult a business into new levels.

At the end of the day, I just really want that person to want to be there and want to succeed. Whether I am just a pass through position and they move on to bigger things, or they end up with my company for the long haul. I just want them to want to succeed!
